# Why use Loadster if AI can write my k6 or JMeter script?

> AI can write a k6, JMeter, or Locust script in a minute, but running it at scale is the hard part. When open source is enough, and what Loadster adds.

First of all, AI can also write Loadster scripts and is very good at it! The Loadster MCP server gives your AI
assistant the ability to create Playwright, Browser Bot, and Protocol Bot scripts, as well as build load test
scenarios, set up monitors, and analyze test results. You still launch the tests, enable the monitors, and spend the
fuel.

Fair question, though. Claude, ChatGPT, or Cursor can also write a decent k6, JMeter, or Locust script in about a
minute, and the open source tool that runs it is free. For some tests, that's all you need.

But writing the script was rarely the hard part of load testing. The work is in everything around it, and that part
still lands on you when the script comes from an AI assistant.

## Writing the Load Test Script Was Never the Hard Part

Once the script exists, someone still has to:

- **Generate the load.** A meaningful test usually needs more traffic than one laptop can produce, ideally from more
than one region. With open source tools, that means provisioning and operating your own load generators.
- **Run real browsers, if you need them.** Each real browser uses a lot of CPU and memory, so browser load at any real
  scale takes serious hardware.
- **Collect and read the results.** Aggregating metrics from many machines, building dashboards, and turning them into
something you can share with your team is its own project.
- **Keep the script working.** Sites change, and a script that worked last month can quietly break. A
[monitor](https://loadster.com/synthetic-monitoring/) running the same script can tell you, and an AI assistant on the Loadster MCP
server can help fix it. You still review the change and enable the monitor.

An AI assistant can help with each of these, but it can't make the infrastructure or the reporting stack go away.

## When a Free Open Source Load Testing Tool Is Enough

For a small HTTP-level test from your own machine, a free open source tool like k6, JMeter, Gatling, or Locust is a
fine first step, and having AI write the script makes it even quicker. We actually think k6 and Locust are really nice
tools.

The open source route tends to get harder when tests grow past a single machine, when you need real browsers, or when
several people need to see and share the results. The [comparison pages](https://loadster.com/compare/) go tool by tool if you want the
details.

## What Loadster Adds Beyond an AI-Written Script

Loadster is a managed platform, so the parts around the script are already built:

- **Load from 32 cloud regions.** Tests run from [AWS and GCP regions](https://loadster.com/manual/cloud-regions/) worldwide with no
infrastructure to set up, or from [self-hosted engines](https://loadster.com/manual/testing-with-loadster-engine/) on your own network.
- **Real browser load testing at scale.** Browser Bots and Playwright Test scripts drive real Chrome browsers on
managed infrastructure. Loadster customers have run load tests with more than 170,000 concurrent Chrome browsers,
and well into the millions of Protocol Bots ([how it scales](https://loadster.com/faqs/maximum-concurrent-bots-or-virtual-users/)).
- **A web-based editor alongside code.** Record scripts with the free browser extension, edit them in the web-based
editor, and drop into JavaScript code blocks when you need to.
- **Reports built in.** Real-time dashboards while the test runs, and shareable reports afterward.
- **Monitoring with the same scripts.** A load test script can also run as a
[24/7 monitor](https://loadster.com/synthetic-monitoring/), which is also a handy way to find out when a site change breaks it.
- **Script importers.** If an assistant already wrote you a k6, JMeter, or Locust script, Loadster can
[import it](https://loadster.com/changelog/2026-06/) and list anything it couldn't translate.

## Let Your AI Assistant Write Loadster Scripts over MCP

You don't have to choose between AI and Loadster. Loadster has a built-in
[MCP server](https://loadster.com/faqs/connect-to-loadster-mcp-server/), so the same assistant that would have written your k6 script can
connect to your Loadster account instead. There it can create Playwright, Browser Bot, and Protocol Bot scripts,
build load test scenarios, set up monitors, and analyze test results.

Launching a full-scale load test stays your call, and so does enabling a monitor, since both spend fuel. See
[Can my AI assistant run load tests or start monitors?](https://loadster.com/faqs/ai-assistant-run-load-tests/) for exactly what an
assistant can and can't do, and [Load Testing with AI](https://loadster.com/ai-load-testing/) for an overview.

If you'd like to try it, 50 units of free fuel are enough for a few small tests, with no credit card required.
